Have a Solid Business Plan- 

Planning is essential to any business's success. A business plan is a good place to start, as it defines your strengths and weaknesses, what you offer, how it's different, and how you intend to expand your offering. Furthermore, try to mentally and practically prepare yourself for anything that could go wrong and how you would handle it. What happens if you get hurt, for example? What happens if one of your clients fails to pay you for a month? What if you find yourself in the midst of a natural disaster? What if a dependable vendor goes out of business? 


Prepare for financial challenges- 

Cash flow was by far the biggest challenge for the majority of the 600+ small businesses we interviewed for the Santam start-up survey. Dealing with cash flow problems can be as simple as setting aside a month's worth of expenses or getting creative with ways to cut costs.


You could give customers a discount if they pay a deposit or the entire amount up front, or even an incentive – for example, if you deliver your product or service a week earlier, you could charge 10% less. Whatever you do, avoid debt at all costs; it's one of the most common causes of small-business failure.


Be frugal- remember you’re a start up- 

It's a bad idea to spend money on flashy offices, expensive equipment, and over-the-top marketing. The survival of your company is dependent on what's in your wallet, so every rand and cent must be double-checked. Maintain a low overhead and effectively manage your cash flow. For Jamie Pike, one of our 1001-day survivors, this meant foregoing a physical shop and selling his wares at a market at first; for design duo JesseJames, it meant sharing their space with other small businesses. 


Don’t be afraid to ask for help- 

There are numerous resources for networking, knowledge sharing, and advice available. Networking can be a great source of support and new ideas in addition to new business opportunities. Attend events like Leaderex (free master classes) and My Biz Expo to learn more about how to grow your business (free if you register before a certain date). Don't be afraid to seek advice from those in your immediate vicinity (such as your intermediary, bank manager, landlord, or neighboring businesses), as well as local online forums and Facebook community groups. 


Put your faith in a trusted mentor- 

It could be a close relative, a former boss or coworker, or even a reliable online source or blog. A mentor is a valuable sounding board—someone who has been where you are and with whom you can check in on a regular basis without being judged. Although 61.9 percent of those who responded to our survey did not have mentors, those who did said mentors had a significant positive impact on their businesses.


Marketing on a shoestring budget- 

Marketing your new business is crucial, but it doesn't have to be expensive. Your friend is social media: setting up a business page on Facebook is free and will improve your online search ranking. It's also free to submit your website's URL to search engines like Google and Bing.


Keep an eye out for local Facebook groups; some will charge a small advertising fee, while others will allow you to promote your business on specific days of the week. The bottom line in marketing is to give everything a shot. You'll never know what will work for you unless you give it a shot.


Look after number one- 

Entrepreneurship is a way of life; the days of working 9 to 5 are gone. That's not to say you have to work yourself to death. You'll be less productive if you don't exercise regularly, eat healthily, and take time to relax. Due to work responsibilities, 64% of our survey respondents said they had to give up valuable time with their family and friends. Working on your time management skills will enable you to set aside enough time in your day to spend with family and friends. 


Build a team that shares your vision- 

It's simple: a great company is made up of great people. You may need to hire employees as your company grows. To begin, spend time interviewing candidates to ensure that they fit your culture and share your values. Second, while it can be difficult to let go, it is critical to learn how to delegate tasks. Finally, don't expect others to be clones of you. Be receptive to new ideas and suggestions. It's always beneficial to gain new perspectives on old methods of operation.

Learn a new software programme or teach yourself how to run your own social media campaigns to improve your project or time management skills.
